What to Expect

The Gondola operates in two stages. The first takes you up to Kongdoori, where you'll find open slopes, places to eat, and sweeping views back down across the Gulmarg valley. From there, a second stage continues up towards Apharwat, higher into the mountains, where the scenery turns dramatically alpine.

Many visitors are happy stopping at the first stage, especially with children or if snow conditions are heavy higher up. Others make a full day of it, continuing to the second stage for the more serious mountain views.

When to Go

Arrive early. Queues build up through the late morning, especially during peak winter weekends, and an early start means shorter waits and softer light for photographs. Weather at altitude can change quickly, so a clear morning is often your best window.

What to Wear

Even on a sunny day, temperatures drop sharply as you gain altitude. Layer up — a warm inner layer, a windproof outer layer, and proper footwear with good grip if you plan to walk around at the top. Sunglasses are worth packing too; snow glare at altitude is stronger than most people expect.

Getting There

Hotel Gulmarg House is a short distance from the Gondola's base station, which makes an early start much easier — no long drive before your day even begins. After a morning on the mountain, it's an easy walk or short ride back to a warm room and a hot meal.

• Carry a fully charged phone or camera — battery life drops faster in the cold.
• Keep some cash on hand for food and rentals at the upper stations.
• If you or anyone in your group is prone to altitude sensitivity, the second stage is worth approaching gradually.
