How Do You Get From Tangmarg to Gulmarg?

You have four options. The right one depends on the weather and your group size.

  1. Your Srinagar cab (clear weather). In normal conditions, your driver can usually take you straight to Gulmarg. You do not need to change vehicles.
  2. A local union taxi (the most common choice). Local drivers wait at the Tangmarg taxi stand. In snow, they run chain-fitted or 4×4 vehicles.
  3. A shared cab. Locals call these “service gaadi”. They run from the Tangmarg bus stand and charge per seat, so they cost far less than a full cab. They leave when full, and availability changes with the season.
  4. Your own car. In snow, you need anti-skid chains and a light vehicle within the seating limit. Get the chains fitted by a registered vendor in Tangmarg.

What Does a Taxi From Tangmarg to Gulmarg Cost?

Travel operators and local guides quote the following union taxi ranges. Sources differ, and fares change with the season, the vehicle and the snow.

Trip Typical range
Tangmarg to Gulmarg, one way ₹1,000 to ₹1,600
Tangmarg to Gulmarg, same-day return ₹2,000 to ₹2,600
Snow chains, per pair (if you drive yourself) Ask a registered vendor for the current rate

An earlier SDM Gulmarg advisory fixed the chain rate at ₹600 per pair, but rates can change.

Four ways to avoid overpaying:

  • Confirm the fare and the waiting time before you get in.
  • Ask for a fare slip from the union booth.
  • Do not prepay for sightseeing packages that a third party sells outside Gulmarg.
  • Report overcharging to the union booth.

Can Outside Taxis Go From Tangmarg to Gulmarg?

In clear weather, yes. Your Srinagar cab can usually reach Gulmarg.

After snowfall, the picture changes. Vehicles without chains stop at Tangmarg, and you switch to a local chain-fitted taxi.

Once you reach Gulmarg, a second rule applies. Outside cabs cannot run local sightseeing inside Gulmarg. They can drop you at your hotel or the main parking area, and you hire a local union taxi for spots such as Drung Waterfall and Baba Reshi.

What Are the Snow Chain Rules on the Tangmarg–Gulmarg Road?

The local administration issues advisories each winter. Here is what recent ones have said:

  • Chains are mandatory during snowfall and icy conditions, including for 4×4 vehicles.
  • Only light vehicles with up to 10 seats may use the road.
  • Heavy vehicles and passenger buses may not travel beyond Tangmarg.
  • Registered vendors install chains in designated parking areas.
  • Tourist vehicles were limited to 8 am to 6 pm during heavy snow in past advisories.
  • Private cars and tour operators must park in designated spaces in Tangmarg, not on the roadside.

Every advisory is different, so check the latest one with the traffic police or the SDM Gulmarg office before you drive up.
